What is a Composite Filling (White Filling)?
A composite filling is a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to restore decayed teeth. Composites are also used for cosmetic improvements of the smile by changing the color of the teeth or reshaping disfigured teeth.
The composites used at the ndu Clinic are BPA Free composite materials - Venus Diamond, and also the composite of choice recommended by the IAOMT from Voco Admira. For build ups under crowns and for certain situations we use a non BPA Glasionomer cement material that is also BPA free called GCP a Glass carbomer filling material that is produced in Holland.
How is a composite placed?
Following preparation, we place the composite in layers, typically using a light specialized to harden each layer. When the process is finished, we shape the composite to fit the tooth. We then polish the composite to prevent staining and early wear.
What are the advantages of composites?
- Aesthetics - can be blended to any shade to match natural tooth colour
- Composites bond to the the tooth and support the remaining structure
- Eliminates mercury from your mouth, keeping toxins from your blood
What are the disadvantages?
After receiving a composite, a patient may experience postoperative sensitivity. Also, the shade of the composite can change slightly if the patient drinks tea, coffee or other staining foods.
